Is there a Multiphonic fo B on Alto saxophone?

Author: admin  //  Category: Saxophone

i have been playing Alto Saxophone for about 5 years now and im a sophmore in high school, finally got the concept of multiophonics froma friend. and instead of flutter tounging a note i have in a solo of mine that i got, (cuz i cant) i need to find a multiphonic for B if there is one. thankyou if anyone can answer it.

Which B (lowest, middle, high, altissimo)? Is B the fundamental note, or one of the multiphonic notes? There are tons of choices for any of these, but it will depend on what works for you.

What is the best way to learn the saxophone?

Author: admin  //  Category: Saxophone

I’ve just bought a saxophone and I have managed to get a few tunes out of it but I’m an absolute beginner. Is there a recommended method or DVD or anything which is really good. Or would it just be best to go to a sax teacher? I just thought I’d add that I don’t like Jazz, so please don’t recommend any Jazz teachers or books etc. cheers.

Well, it depends upon how much sound you get out of it versus how much noise.

There is much more to playing sax than the proper fingering of the keys. You must hold your mouth and tongue just right, and be able to use both to help shape the sound and punctuate the beat.

If you can do this part fine, you should be okay with self-teaching. If you have any trouble with the mouth, or with reaching the keys and other mechanics, it is best to at least start out with a teacher. You can always use a teacher to get the basics and then go to self-teaching to fill in your personal style and sound.

For self-teaching, I recommend (check Amazon.com for all these titles):

What is a good accompaniment to an alto saxophone?

Author: admin  //  Category: Saxophone

My wife plays an alto Saxophone and I thought it would be nice to learn an instrument so we could play together. What is an instrument that goes well with her sax?
Possible factors: I know very little about music, don’t want to play a guitar or Drums.

I personally think Piano is the best choice. Piano goes well with any instrument, for an accompaniment, but can also go well as the lead. It is used in all genres, like the drums. Also, if you know piano, learning other instruments is easier. The drums are hard in the beginning, but they get easy, so if you have rhythm, you can play it later. But also, you can play a brass instrument, if you want to be in the same section, if you get good, and are playing in a jazz band, or a band with a brass section (yes, in bands, saxes are included in the brass section). And also, if you learn trumpet, it would be easy to go to baritone, or tuba.

So here are the points for piano

-universal instrument; good for all genres
-easy to learn other instruments after
-good instrument for complete beginners
-easy to learn

Trumpet

-Used in lots of genres ( jazz, orchestra, and sometimes in pop and rock brass sections.
-Not the hardest to get the hang of
-Fun to play!
-Big parts

I personally suggest piano as starter, and then if you want, when you get good to move on to trumpet.

How do you play soft notes on a saxophone?

Author: admin  //  Category: Saxophone

I just got a Saxophone and, while not very good, I can get it to work. But when trying to play softly all I get is a really high pitched messy sound.
How do I play notes softly?

Playing notes softer on a clarinet or sax requires some decent lung control. Before you start trying this, be sure that you have built up the lung capacity to play the instrument in general first. This takes some time and practice. In other words, if you still get winded or light head just playing the instrument for a decent amount of time, you probably are not there yet.

Once you have mastered a regular controlled volume and it sounds "in tune", try this technique.

1. Pick a midrange note that is easy to hold for several counts. This may vary from person to person.

2. Blow at an average volume that you can control and hold the note. As you hold the note, tighten your ombisure and begin trying to lower the air flow into the instrument to slowly decrease the volume. The most important part is to try to control the sound and keep it in pitch/ tune.

3. Keep practicing this over and over, slowly switching between volumes (cresando and decresando). As you master midrange pitches, start to challenge yourself with other pitches that are harder to control.

4. At first, you will probably get very winded, so take some breaks to catch your breath between sessions. Also try playing some music that uses lots of change in volume. It will be more fun that just playing one note all the time.
